Andrew Keen has a preposterous article "Economy to give Open Source a Good Thumping" on Internet Evolution. In that article he calls open source contributors radicals and irrational, the concept of FOSS utopian and, cannot for the life of him figure out why anybody would contribute their labor for "free".
His singular lack of understanding of what makes open source tick is appalling.
Open Source software works because contributors like, the open-sourcers we interviewed, are motivated by a passion to develop, share and improve. He does not understand the "What is in it for me" value proposition in open source projects.
In this economic downturn, I see open source projects as a career enhancing proposition. Open source participation is a good way to hone skills, network and position yourself for opportunities that will come when the economy turns around, as it always does.
