 Open Source Projects for Perl Php Python RubyFor anyone interested in programming, in Perl, Python, Ruby or Python, purely for pleasure, open source projects provide an excellent avenue to hone your skill and also, contribute to the community. There are various open source projects, and I am sure there is one that suits your interest. Open source projects are typically registered in sites like Sourceforge, FreshMeat, Ohloh. Ruby has its own site called RubyForge where  most of  Ruby based open source projects are registered. Php, due to the fact that it has been around the longest has the largest number of projects registered in Sourceforge(11,048). Perl, Python and Ruby have nearly identical number of projects.
For Ruby enthusiasts, head first to RubyForge as it has the largest and the latest open source projects.

PHP is actually the <em>youngest</em> of these four languages, dating from the mid-90s. Also, it may be important to include the CPAN when comparing Perl projects. It carries some 12,000 distributions.
