Continuing on web applications, book marking sites are all the rage. You canât read a post without stumbling on at least 4. Two of the sites have been in the news, REDDIT (which just received its venture capital shot) and DIGG. Like techcrunch.com and runningwithfoxes.com, Reddit.com is a social networking site where people can send in their links/bookmarks on any topic under the sun. The problem is there are just too many things fighting for your attention, so a better classification would definitely help.
Head on with Reddit is Digg, which is omni-present. An early starter, Digg has had the time advantage, the site is better organized and more relevant. However the hottest story right now is how Redditâs owners are trying to do the dirty on Digg, with allegations of people paying to be featured on the site!
del.icio.us is a social book-marking website â so it actually allows you to store your bookmarks online, see your friendsâ bookmarks, add links etc. You can of course, access it from anywhere. On del.icio.us, you can use tags to organize and remember your bookmarks. Making the whole system far more flexible and easy-to use. But all could do with some thought on how the information can be made more useful, itâs very easy to get mired in a swarm of obscure postings/tags.
Personally I found Diigo www.diigo.com to be the most delightful and one step ahead. This fun tool allows you to highlight, bookmark and forward, any content from any site on planet Web. Even better, you can actually add a sticky note with your comments for either public or private viewing. This is in addition to all the regular features of a wiki â creating groups, shared content, collaborating on files and projects etc. You do need to download the tool bar which comes in all popular browser versions. I spent a most happy half hour, sticking notes on random web sites, but am sure it can be put to more productive use. Public comments are monitored by an editing team.
